Probably my favourite Jack Kelly band, Last Rights were perhaps the missing link between the fury and rawness of Negative FX and the moshability of Slapshot. They played one show (see flyer) and release a two song single “Chunks/So Ends Our Night”. Since i recently read that this band still hasn’t hit the ears of many kids whom it should have, i took the liberty to upload the 6 songs that were supposed to be released as a 10″ on Taang! but didn’t see the light of day. They were released later by Taang! with the Negative FX self-titled LP on CD, and later on Reflex Records as the “No Guts No Glory” LP.

No End In Sight

Yeah, another post with an Abused song as the heading. BUT as negative as the words may be, I’m gonna put a positive spin on the term. Hardcore is in a good state. It seems as though alot of really good bands are sweeping the country, and they all bring different aspects to the table. Bands like Iron Mind who make me feel like I fell asleep with the Where the Wild Things Are comp still spinning causing a brilliant dream, The Street Youth (R.I.P) who sounded exactly like The Abused, Our Survival who are keeping this current Youth Crew revival alive and Ill Brigade from the ashes of Ill. And some of the bands who made me cringe a year ago are getting better. I hope this trend continues for a long time to come. I thought hardcore was on the decline again about a year ago, but i was wrong. Maybe i have learned to be more tolerant?

Anyway, this time last week i was tearing strips off my vocal chords and earning more frequent flyer points than the Australian Cricket Team at the first Melbourne Gorilla Biscuits show EVER, staring in awe of dudes who played in some of the bands that shape who i am today. Dudes from Warzone, Side By Side, Youth Of Today, Project X and ofcourse Gorilla Biscuits and Civ. I still don’t feel worthy being able to see such royalty. One guy put it into perspective for me when i was blabbering on, he said “they are still just dudes playing in a band”, and thats how they acted. They weren’t rockstars, they didnt have bullshit attitudes or think they were better than anyone. They have faith in the fact that hardcore is still alive. Thats what todays hardcore bands need to remember. We’re all the same, we all make a difference, the spirit of youth, we all live it.

EARTHLINGS/TALKIN’ STRAIGHT INTERVIEW

Its weird when good things come from places you’d least expect, and some of my favourite moments involving hardcore happened in the Mid North Coast retirement village Port Macquarie. Over the past few years the same group of dudes have been putting on VERY DIY shows (one show in a beach car park with a remote generator) and doing some cool (and some questionable) bands. And Australia is taking notice. Here is an interview with the drummer and all round handsome stallion Ben from Earthlings, and formerly Talkin’ Straight. Enjoy.

Ok so you’re in Newcastle now, tell me what happened to Home Street?

I wish i had some fantastic story about a crazy house show and the walls got moshed in or something but its boring. The lease ran out so everyone went there seperate ways and it sucks because that household was awsome and a base for allot of people to hang out/stay/shows etc. all good things must come to an end i guess.

Port has bred quite a few decent hardcore bands over the last couple of years, Bad Mouth, Go! Go! Go!, ect. but my favourite was your first band, the way too short lived Talkin’ Straight (Straight On). How the hell does a band that sounds like the scum of New York come from the beach?

Man i think your giving us too much credit haha. I guess the way it happened was me and garry had talked about wanting to do a band but i lived in newcastle and he lived in port so it was just an idea, then when i moved out of my house in newcastle garry and drew and jamis offered me a place to live so i shifted to port. Im a youth crew nerd and i think garry was just keen to do another band so we started. got jamis to sing and william to play bass. (will had never picked up a bass before talkin straight so full credit to him. best dude.) As for sounding like the scum of new york? i think we were a long way off that hah. had some of the best times of my life with that band though all great people.

The band that is taking the country by storm is Earthlings. Tell me a little bit about this band, and what the band stands for, and how it came to be. Also, enlighten me with your favourite “Drew” moment.

Again i think youre giving us too much credit haha. But thank you just the same. Earthlings is like a 90′s vegan mosh band with a name stolen from a great documantary. We have a demo tape (its taken ages and we have been VERY lazy but im pretty sure there is one now) and we have a live split with GODEATGOD from port macquarie (also a tape). We are featuring on two vegan compilations coming out soon, one for NO FUCKING WHEY! records as a benifit for the shac7 and also www.VEGANTHIS.ORG are doing a comp and we have submitted a track for that aswell so get those and support those organisations when they come out. The band started as a side project while me and garry where doing talkin straight and ended up becoming semi-serious. As for my favourite Drew moment? Id have to say watching him get into a wrestling match with the security at the down under nightclub and getting himself arrested for NO REASON WHAT SO EVER would take the cake haha.

Any bands out there that the people should get into?

MY NEW BAND haha. Im not sure man everyones into different stuff. personally im backing Cant Relate, Stand Hard, Make The Most, Values Here, Crosscheck, Street Youth, Touch n’ Go, Skyway etc (its a shame that allot of those bands have recently broken up) also look for LINEBREAK from qld soon, stu from values here is singing for a new youth crew type band up there and i predict it to be awsome.

Tell me about your new little project?

Well its called Golden Point. Its another yc band and at the moment the line up is as follows. Myself on vocals, Mike from crosscheck on guitar, Beau from shitfight on second guitar, Dane from his mums house on bass, and a young girl named Jodie on drums. We are recording a demo really soon that will just be me and mike playing all the instruments and me doing vox etc so ill send you some when they are finished.

Euro Youth Crew or US Youth Crew?

Bands like Common Cause, Eyeball, and Sportswear answer this question for me.

So I sold out and got one of these blog things… SO i guess I’ll be telling the world how much it sucks, how stupid people are and how much I hate myself – just like everybody else does on these things.

REALLY if you are reading this you know me, or know of me, otherwise why are you reading this? I live a simple life. Raised by the beach in a large regional city in Northern New South Wales, it’s hard to keep things complicated. Sometimes I thought it was, but it really wasnt. It was just a matter of looking at life with not much focus for such a long time. All there was to life was gossip, your small group of friends and how the waves are in the morning. Anyway, I have been living in Melbourne now for just on 8 months, so with my first post I thought I’d document what has happened since moving down.

OK so I started my move by leaving Sawtell to stay with my Dad for a few days. Here is a few photos I took on Anzac Day while my Dad was at work. Sarah flew into Newcastle the following morning and headed to Sydney.

Sarah and I got to Sydney at around Lunchtime and met with my best mate in the world Troy. We met him at Chatswood station, and HOLY SHIT. Just look at the photo of him below. We had some food and jumped in the car to go to Brookvale Oval. We had to jump off the Warringah Freeway but got stuck in the wrong lane, ended up at fucking Balmain! About half an hour later we were parked and ready for battle. Sheavesy rocked up about an hour after that. We spent the majority of the evening yelling shit at the Bulldogs Army about how crap their team is. This was Sarah’s first time at an NRL match. We beat them by 40 or so and she was sold.

Haha! This fuckin’ guy! This is my best mate Troy (also goes under a large variety of other names that I don’t have time or space to list) after falling off his motorbike. Two broken wrists and a broken collarbone! Wires and plates and shit. Best guy out there.

After the game and a brief stop for food at Sylvania’s finest, Sarah, Troy and I made our way to Troy’s palace at Dunmore (I’ll post photos later of his house further down the saga). Slept. Woke up at around 7 to begin the trip down to Melbourne. An emotional embrace and we were on the road. All I have to say is Albion Park – Moss Vale= FUCK THAT! Stopped for breakfast at Sutton Forest and drove for a while. Listened to Warzone. Stopped for a toilet break at some dive called Gunning. The whole area between Goulburn and Gundagai was just brown and dusty due to the drought. Stopped for lunch at Gundagai and it went from comfortable and sunny to freezing and rain. Crap. Stopped at Albury for fuel and then at Glenrowan for photo ops. Arrived in Melbourne at roughly 6.

So once I’d settled in and stuff I started applying for jobs. Got a phone call 15 minutes after applying for a position with Telstra. I’m still there. I have met some good people, and some terrible people. I don’t have any photos from work.
